Hello, I'm very interested by the Flix Engine/SDK.

We have a software that create AVI of 3D characters with a green background and we want to automatically convert thie video in flv with alpha channel. Our input video hasn't alpha channel.

Is it possible to do chroma key with flix engine or must we use an other soft (in order to add Alpha Channel) before using the flix Engine?

Thanks a lot !

Hi neo. I'm Lou, the new documentation guy at On2 (http://on2.com/).

Unfortunately, while Flix Engine grants fine-grained control of alpha channel transcoding, it can't today build an alpha channel from scratch. We're considering it for future versions. In fact, your implementation makes a good case for scriptable chroma key alpha creation, because you know the pixels to select. In meatspace prodution with a physical green- or blue-screen, you'd want a human deciding the tolerance. We need to support your scenario.

In the meantime, Flix Pro (a desktop tool) will do what you want. Take a look (http://on2.com/consumer/flix-pro).

Incidentally, at On2 we call the current Flix Engine (http://on2.com/developer/flix-engine-sdk/) for Linux and Windows "Engine2". It's completely our own work and a much saner and professional API than the earlier, inherited product. Really nice.

Just curious. What's a documentation guy exactly?

Hard to say. Tech writer? Hate that term. A hack who writes. In my case a writer, Web-dev, and desktop Linux user, with an iBook over there and a Windows box I can boot if I have to. If nobody minds, I'd really rather be root.

My job at On2 is to make our user communications rock, and good stuff is coming. The thing to know about On2 is that we're geeks trying to do right and also do business.

One more thing: I work with very smart and cool people. You'd like 'em.
